The Aves Archipel
The Aves Archipel is located about 30 miles east of Bonaire.
It consists of 2 groups of atols; Aves Sotavento in the west, and Aves Barlovento in the east about 10 miles apart. The Islands belong to Venezuela, but have been uninhabited for decades. There is only one Coast Guard station which houses about 12 junior officers, as this is their first out post. As a yacht we are free to enter the Archipel as long as we give notice to the Coast Guard station and sign their forms. There is no Visa requirement nor fees for any nationality and the young officers come to the boat and are extremely friendly and helpfull. The word 'Aves' translates into 'bird' and you can find a spectacular amount or rare breed on the Islands. It is a joy to see these birds dive for fish. Underwater life is extraordinary beautiful, and snorkling is highly recommended. Untouched coral, beautiful fish and turtles are plenty. |
